One major mistake (probably among hundreds) I might have made was not
thinking to put a yard on a curve or corner of the layout! As long as
the approach and uncoupler ramps are on fairly straight track switching
a single or double ended yard will work just fine. Many prototypical
yards were built following river banks that were seldom straight.
I basically have three branchlines. I can send an operator into each
one where he/she could spend most of an ops session.

Bill,
I don't have room for a wye. I actually have 2 turntables and 2
roundhouses. The turntable/engine facilities have always been my
favorite area of a layout.
The branch line I have in mind would greatly add to the overall
usefulness of the layout. I don't really have any layout corners that
typically get filled with a small siding. Right now the only switching
I have is the REA area. I have not decided what I am going to do with
the other straight section. That could have some switching added.
Further I am approaching being 'track bound" with lots of trains on
the layout while LOTS of trains are still in their boxes. That is
nothing new... Another yard would help fix that issue.
Thank You,
Bill Lane
