Paul....
While we agree on just about everything, I will take exception to your word
"requires". A reversable frog is NOT required. There are plastic frogs that
are unable to be reversed. There are also lots of all-metal turnouts which use
point pressure to control the frog polarity without the use of auxiliary
switches and wiring. Neither of these approaches are generally considered
"reversible" (I don't think).
Perhaps it would be better to say that for maximum protection against unwanted
shorts, it is a good idea to use reversible frogs and "tied" (to the adjacent
stock rails) points. I would agree with that statement.
Although, simply gauging both the wheels and the track correctly accomplishes
the same effect (except when running a 2-10-4 through a #4 turnout). No
protection against stupidity.
