While doing my missionary work on the OGR forums, I'm amazed at how many
3-railers consider smoke so important. Many won't (or at least say they won't)
buy a locomotive unless it's got smoke. The more smoke the better.
There's even quite a few feel that Lione'l's cheating them because the latest
"J" and Mohawk don't have the "steam whistle effect" where smoke comes out
through a hole in the boiler under the whistle when it's blown.
And, your right, Bill. The "smoke" is actually a oily vapor that tends to
deposit itself along the top of the locomotive near the stack. It also
contributes to dirt collection on the track.
The late John Allen had smoke units in his G&D locomotives and commented once
commented on how he had to clean track less often once he stopped using them.
He also had a smoke uint in an ash pit to simulate the dupming of ashes, that
even with minimum usage, her noted the the track got dirtier faster by the ash
pit.
I find smoke annoying in general, and I REALLY dislike having to clean the spew
off the locomotives. I turn off or disconnect the smoke units in my AM and SHS
steamers.
