Not being an engineer I have no real experience but I have likened diesels
to a truck with a manual transmission. The diesel can be revved up
regardless of the load or speed.  If there is a starting load the diesel
idles up to create enough electricity for the traction motors to get moving.
Once moving it is just about maintaining speed over the terrain.

 

I am about ½ mile from the former PRSL north-south mainline.  It is mostly
flat near me but there are some minor hills. When I am outside I can hear
the diesels pretty well. Some days they are wound up pretty good and other
times it seems like they are coasting.
