You're almost right, Bill. A diesel is more like a truck with a fluid clutch. 
The engine can rev, but the running gear is going to go only as fast as the 
load it is trying to move.

There's a story around Ft. Madison about a man who bought a new Fluid Drive 
Dodge and couldn't get it to move on a steep intersection.
