We all have (Except for Bob N) our own preferences on how to do our own DCC
installations. For me it is:

One decoder only for sound and motor controls

Decoder & speaker go in the loco. Speaker is under the stack pointing up

NO wires ever between the loco & tender unless the loco & tender can be
stored in its box without separating them. (SHS, Rex & a VERY few others)
are like this.

In brass tenders I put a separate decoder just to run a backup light if
applicable. I have to make the tender all wheel pickup for this.

The oldest sound decoders I ever had were 2) DSD150 which have since been
replaced with Tsunamis. Friends were way ahead of me with DCC and especially
sound units. In older sound decoders a flash short could dump the
programming. I did not want any of that so I avoided sound units for a long
time. My very first test of my very first DCC installation dumped the
programming on 7 locos on Bill Moore's layout. He was not happy. Live n
learn...
