As implied in one of the emails previous, SHS did have a preorder situation
for the DEALER, for locomotives especially, but all the cars as well. Don
and Mike did one heck of a job to cover all the preorders and still have a
few left over for later sales (sometimes too good of a job, eh Don?), but F
units and the scale 2-8-0 certainly didn’t stick around long enough to
satisfy all possible sales. There just isn’t enough money in the bank to
have too much of every item, just so the late comer can have what he
wants...
John O. makes a very valid point about critical mass. This same thing
applies to an individual store. Having enough stock on hand to meet every
day customer demands is critical. Being able to get other things on short
notice is the other critical element. Having dead stock in inventory is a
killer, though it can make a store LOOK good. It sure would have been nice
to have a working crystal ball and be able to see into the future!
