After looking at some prototype photos found via google, it looks like the 
boiler on the Lionel version is too small in diameter, while the MTH version 
looks closer. The angle of the photos may contribute to that.

Otherwise, there are so many small dufferences I start to wonder if they were 
based on the same type!

That’s a toughie.  The Lionel version’s tender isn’t quite right and the MTH 
version has the wrong lead and trailing trucks, and is closer to a Y-6.

There are some folks wondering if the Lionel SD-70 will be better (or worse) 
than the MTH SD-70.  Not having seen the MTH SD-70, I cannot make a comparison. 
 However, there are photos of the same engine from both companies in O gauge.  
Lionel Y-3 is on top.  MTH Y-3 is on bottom.  Make your own comparisons.
