   It would depend on the rigid wheelbase of the loco and the radius of the 
curve. I'd calculate the middle ordinate for a curve of the desired radius and 
a chord as long as the loco wheelbase then use it plus the thickness of the 
loco flange plus a bit of extra for error slack.
 For instance a 45 inch radius would give a middle ordinate of .069 for a 5 
inch wheelbase, add .035 for flange and you get .1040,times 1.1 for error gives 
.1144   One eight inch is .125 so that would probably be a handy number to use. 
 for a 6 inch wheelbase on 45 inch curve the number is .1350, times 1.1=.1485 , 
for 7 inch wheelbase the number is .175 times 1.1=.1925 or more like 1/5 of an
