At one time PBL used to sell real coal that was obtained from a mine
along the DRG&W narrow gauge. Of course in typical PBL lingo--you had
to use narrow gauge coal in your K engines!
When I was shooting the SHS coal hoppers, Don sent me a few of the loads
but they didn't set in the hopper real well due to the crossbraces. I
then marked off where the braces would be and started to cut away the
foam, but that didn't work fast enough for me. I then tried to melt it
away with a soldering gun--wow--the fumes from the melting foam were
strong--worse than any old time plant fumes.
I do suggest doing what boB recommends--use some fairly stuff plastic
sheet or fit some styrofoam into the bays and shape. Then use typical
white glue and sprinkle some on the foam. I did the same thing for my
iron ore hopper train. I would worry about different sized coal
chunks. When I was a kid we used the flat side of an axe to break up
the big pieces--there different grades of coal. Also remember the
railroads used the left-overs for their tenders. The good stuff was
sold at a higher price to the retailers.

I wonder how these loads look compared to the old Blue Mountain
Hobbies coal loads? I too need a few more loads.
My coal loads for the SHS hoppers do not look as good as the Blue
Mountain loads in my AM 2 bay hoppers. They have huge chunks of coal
compared to smaller chunks in the old Blue Mountain loads.

Folks….I just ran out of coal loads a few minutes ago. Blue
Mountain used to be my favorite, but I think they are out of
business now. Would anyone know if a hobby shop might have some
Blue Mountain coal loads suitable for an American Models 2-bay
hopper? Or if there is some new company making coal loads of
excellent quality these days? Any hidden stashes out there that
might be looking for a new home? Desperation is setting in. The
layout tourists will start to arrive in just three hours.
H-a-l-p…..!! Thanks…..Ed Loizeaux
