The short answer is, there are differences. You would have to compare the standard the Workshop drafted for its members with the S-MOD standard to determine the differences. The Workshop developed a standard that covers everything from wiring architecture to ballast color - to suit the needs of its members. The Workshop is not a modular group, per se - it's a group of like-minded individuals that built a portable layout, but used a Free-mo inspired approach to provide the members of the group with additional flexibility. Hope that helps.
