Haha, yeah look at them as a necessary evil. I use micro engineering "small"
as they are easy to find and not overly huge. Their "micro" size are a bit too
small for easy handling but look good in place. No matter what kind one uses
it's a lot easier if the roadbed under the tie is soft enough to take the spike
point as it goes thru the tie, a hard surface under the tie will cause the
spikes to bend or at best take a lot of extra force to push in.Soft wood or
homasote works good, hard surface like cabinet grade plywood or hard wood not
so good. If the roadbed is too hard to accept spikes adding a layer of cork
before gluing down the ties is a solution.
Before getting too far into handlaying a lot of track I'd suggest trying a few
sections of tomalco or shinohara track as a test, they may change your
