Jim, I too bought one of the first run U33c's in E-L livery. For one I
wanted "help the cause" so to speak as I'm primarily a 50's era modeler, but
the impending SD-45's from DesPlaines made me think I'd get two of 'em to mu
with the U33C. In fact I thought I had read that Ron S. was waiting on the
Lionel release of the U-boat to match the gearing with that on the SD's. I
haven't heard anymore about the DesPlaines SD's either.
As for slow speed, I don't think a big U-boat would be doing a whole lot of
slow speed switching in their early years, same for the SD-45's. On the E-L
they usually handled the fast piggyback trains, high priority freight.
I'm also not convinced that Lionel didn't realize they gave the E-L units a
a U36C number series, I'm trying to see what if any external differences there
are between the 33C's and the 36C's.
