I might have something close to what your suggesting (but not doing). Way too busy right now to look through old slides--after all how many 40' boxcars are still out there so I probably don't have anything recent.

And speaking of old stuff--there's another that I'll find someday. It's a shot of one of the DRG&W narrow gauge MW cars. It has a tremendous amount of coupler droop. To be fair however the car was probably far from being ready go without some rip track work. I would bet that the amount of droop, in proportion, wouldn't make it around our layouts. It certainly needed that little "blue pill"!

With that being said let me question Matt and ask--what American Models coupler? The original AM coupler that came with our first cars was very close to the Kadee #5. Therefore it too would be too small. Likewise the coupler for the early plain sided passenger cars. I don't have any of the Budd cars, but that coupler and perhaps the Amtrak version might be larger but I'm not sure. When I started to build my first kits in high school, I used the Stewart dummy coupler which is about the same size as the AM dummy, so I wonder where they got those dimensions from.

It might be interesting for someone with spare time to take photos of a real box car and a model S box car with HO couplers and a model S box car with S couplers and place the pictures side by side so that everything is in the right size proportions. Then we could all view the visual size comparisons, etc. and see how much difference there really is. As usual, lots of ideas for others to do. Cheers....Ed Loizeaux
