Very interesting, I have just returned from a funeral for a fellow modeler. He was 90 so he did live a full life. Bob's layout was one of the first I ever saw on our November tour and being a CNW and Soo Line guy made it all extremely worthwhile. Despite being in HO it was a pretty good layout. Bob was one of the WWII generation but he always kept up the the latest equipment including signaling and DCC. So my friend might have been 180 degrees from Bill's friend because he did build a layout, serve locally in several RR associations, helped others with their layouts and actually help in custom building layouts--all this while also having a normal life too.

Since I'm no longer a spring chicken, I've made a pact with a couple of guys--we've all agreed to attend each other's funerals! I also intend to be late for mine!

HI Bill --
Sorry to hear about your friend.
I second the rest of your sermon! Build something, even if it is a little switching layout on a shelf.

I am sitting here reeling from a phone call that a good friend passed last night – without warning. ... ... Lou is another long time S friend that was always “about to do” something. There is always something standing in the way of getting started – that was not just unique to Louie. ... My closing is this. If you have been “planning on starting your layout” tomorrow for (the last) 20 years ***maybe you should start today***.
Thank You,
Bill Lane
