I have an S Scale Omnicon K4 made by Samhongsa in 1987. It has the free
rolling drive. The photo shows my fix for locking out the free rolling
drive. http://www.lanestrains.com/Samhongsa_Gearbox.jpg On my K4
<http://www.lanestrains.com/Samhongsa_Gearbox.jpg%20On%20my%20K4> The brass
worm gear is not shown. Since my layout is flat I have enabled the free
rolling drive again.

The next gear on my K4 drive is Delrin and the 2 smaller gears are brass.
The Samhongsa gearboxes are usually alternating materials between brass and
Delrin, and are not always the same.

This loco was completed in October.
http://www.lanestrains.com/S_Scale_PRR_K4_5495.htm It is my most involved
project by far.

With moderate running time I have blown out the center teeth on the brass
worm gear TWICE since it was completed. It looks like a corn cob with the
only center eaten! Yet the next Delrin gear is fine. I am truly at a loss
here. I thought the Delrin gear would the first to go. Any ideas? This
gearbox was WELL lubed. The loco has some extra weight added but it slips
instead of stalling so I mostly think it is not overweight. I hate to think
I have to pull 4 cars with it forever for fear of continually taking out the
worm gear. I do NOT want to take this loco apart! The paint always suffers a
bit every time.

I don't know if NWSL can make me a better brass worm gear. I would consider
it.

For now I have secured some replacement parts from the original run but that
supply is not endless. I wonder if going with all brass gears would help.
NWSL has made the 2 smaller gears for me in the past as I thought they would
be the wear parts.
