In my old layout I had a hinged lift-up to enter it, but I normally left it
down except when I had company. I had no problem ducking under it.

My current layout is different. I have three vertical lift sections on my
layout. Normally I leave two of them down and just duck under them. Note I
mean duck under, not crawl under. In the raised position, I can walk under
them in a fully upright position. Those who are of above average height may
need to duck. To view or operate the Sn3 mainline and most of the layout,
there is no need to go through them. However, you must transverse them to
get to some of the S and Sn2, and I have to raise them for oil burner
maintenance. I had to go with vertical lift-ups in these locations because
I didn't have enough vertical clearance for a lift-up hinged on one side.

Beside these, I have a hinged lift-up in front of a slop sink and a
removable section in front of the outside basement entrance. The outside
entrance is used only occasionally, like taking something large into or out
of the basement.
