So I dug out one of the large boxcars I'd mentioned, origin unknown although it
could be one of the Lionel O27 cars Tom mentioned. In S scale it is about 54.5
feet long, almost 15 feet high and 11 feet wide. The opening for the door is
just over 12 high and 11 feet wide. I held it up beside a DPH FMC moden boxcar.
It looked just a bit wider, definitely taller but not unmanageable (it could be
cut down a bit) The pattern on the roof negates any point in trying to cut it
to narrow it. Also it has these huge door tracks that would have be carved off
along with cast on ladders etc and the door space filled in . Mite be best to
make it a plug door. I have some old Quality Craft castings for that. Any
suggestions or has anyone tried this?cheers

. . . . . . . One issue I'm having is finding
appropriate modern cars. . . . . . . . . . . . . Craftsman kits are fine.

* 50' gons appropriate for scrap service - I've seen the AM
car, but am hoping for variety

Good modelers have taken the Lionel gondola, about 49 ft IL, and
narrowed it down for S. Dave Held took two and made a longer S scale gon
for scrap loading.

Alex Binkley has taken an MTH
gondola, narrowed it, and made a nice S scale gon. Hope these gents don't
mind being mentioned.

Don't overlook Lionel O27 and MTH
Railking for items that can be adapted to S.
