Picked up two of the S-Gauge K-line tankers from my favorite local
Train Shop Thursday evening. The paint schemes, trucks, wheels and
couplers are first class. By the way the coupler is a metal coupler
and has a good snap action to it. After putting the cars on the track
with a mixture of 'Flyer', 'S-Helper' and 'AM' rolling stock, I was
dissapointed with thier physical size. I had read the cars were made
from old Marx tooling but didn't realize how oversized they would
look when mixed with S-Gauge manufactured equipment.
Looks like K-Line is going done the same trail as Lionel. They want a
share of S-Gauge market with little faith in investing money in the
product. Other than the trucks, wheels and couplers, this is a modest
investment on their part. They are using old tooling that no longer
had a customer base in the O Gauge market.
Lionel has done basically the same thing, using Gilbert tooling and
putting S Gauge trucks and couplers on 0-27 equipment. At least with
Lionel the majority of the equipment is S Gauge. They have also
promised a new steamer, it would be nice to see them deliver on this
new American Flyer product. If this steamer is manufactured, I do
believe it will be the first entirely new S Gauge product from them.
American Models and S-Helper are continuing to offer us new products
with what I'm sure is a large investment on their part in development
and tooling. Continued support on our part will keep new products
coming from these dedicated S Gauge manufacturers.
While the lower prices for equipment offered by K-line is certainly
attractive to us all. We shouldn't forget, just what it is we're
getting for our money.
My two cent worth.
