Huh? Are we talking past each other?
The metadata is stored in the backend, just like the data. Otherwise you
wouldn't be able to access your file system without separately carrying
around a copy of the metadata.
The local, cached metadata copy is stored (naturally) in the directory
specified with --cachedir.
