salam, This just highlights the problem with OpenSource movement getting too chummy with the corporations. I'm not sure about the exact license restrictions, but my understanding was that if Java for instance was released by Sun as open source, then it can't be made close source after that, except in a newer version, in which case we (the open source community) could just fork from the latest open source version. Perhaps this is not correct, not sure. The main problem is that Oracle is most likely looking at ways to profit from it's new "assets".
1. Open Office (an office suit that we are all familiar with). --- This is a little troubling, but is probably more reason for developers and users alike to shift over to Koffice or the de-facto "Gnome Office" (ie. Abiword, Gnumeric etc) 2. MySQL DB (Almost every open source project that uses a DB uses MySQL). --- Sadly a lot of software relies upon it. I've always much preferred Postgresql, not just because it's not controlled by a corporation as MySql was (even before Sun, it was still owned and controlled by a corporation), but because it's much better db. Since Oracle's main business is databases, it's unlikely they'll continue MySql in it's present form. Even though it's not high end enough to compete directly with OracleDB, there's no need for them to keep it strong enough to one day do that. 3. VirtualBox (Virtualization Software). --- Again, bit of a worry, but just more reason for devs and users to jump behind projects like Qemu. 4. JAVA (THE programing language). --- This is the biggest worry, as Java is all over the place, desktop, phones etc This is perhaps one of Sun's biggest assets, and I can only imagine what Oracle are thinking up to try and profit from it. 5. GlassFish (web server like apache TomCat...). --- Glass who? 6. NetBeans (a Free IDE for programing in general not only for java!). --- Do people actually use this? Apart from those who are learning from books that promote it, and so it's part of chapter 1, on how to install a development environment?? Eclipse, Geany, Anjuta etc. there's plenty of good IDEs out there anyway, no loss if you ask me. 7. and finally Open solaris! which is a server side software application! --- Server side software application?? Akhi, Solaris is an Operating System, it's a version of Unix, much like Linux/Sabily is. Solaris is a great OS, and it'd be a shame if it were closed up, not long after it'd actually become open source. People have been waiting for a long time for a "real unix" like this to become open source, so it'd be sad if it were now taken back off us.
