Can the python interpreter be easily replaced (say, with either  
ipython or sage)?

Until you (we) have the sage interpreter, it isn't an IDE; it's just  
an editor.  I don't think, for example, that supporting "a subset",  
or including just some modules, will suffice.

Maybe put the jEdit help back in until the sage version is ready?  It  
can't hurt, and will probably help.

Are you sure about this?  I think that the appropriate plugin will  
have to be 'sage'.

I'm really not up for a running gun-battle with Java.  Your packaging  
is a good start for removing the hassles from this kind of game.

On that subject: I can't find a way to modify key bindings.  Is it  
possible?  If it doesn't walk, fly, and quack like emacs, it ain't a  
duck :-}
