You may be able to get some useful ideas from a video io package someone wrote for matlab that uses ffmpeg: http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/loadFile.do?objectId=15224 I haven't poked around in the internals of this at all myself, so I have no idea whether any of it is adaptable.
