I get some good work done on trains, planes, and buses, and I like
having as self-contained a sage environment as possible, so:
+1, but:

Documentation usually isn't big enough to be a space concern, although
if for some reason a manual is big perhaps it could be made optional.
There is the "extra_docs" optional package - perhaps what you are
talking about could be part of that?  Then folks who care can get it
but it keeps the standard version smaller.
