Following up: I do see this after importing the patch.  Looking at the  
file in question, I do not see any errant characters on line 3.

This is the error we're seeing:

SyntaxError: Non-ASCII character '\xc3' in file /Users/tmp/ 
sage-3.2.2.alpha2/local/lib/python2.5/site-packages/sage/combinat/ 
ranker.py on line 3, but no encoding declared; see
