Yup; I removed the character and re-ran sage.  No problems.

That's downright weird: If I switch back to the main branch ("sage -b  
main"), I don't get this failure even though the file is the same as  
the one originally in the cloned branch.

In the cloned branch, without changing the character, I get the  
failure running "sage -t" (I'm not sure what you intended by "still  
OK" :-}).
