It turned out that the bug is in GAP: According to Frank Lübeck, the internal recursion depth counter is not decremented when leaving a function by an error. He said he will fix it in GAP. If Frank allows, I will post his example on ticket #7001, and probably the ticket should be closed afterwards, labeled "reported upstream" and marked "invalid". Or what is the usual procedure?
