I personally do not like Sagemath. Someone else expressed that view too.

I personally prefer the name 'Sage' but I do foresee it having it running into
problems at one point or another.

There have been plenty of software products change names.

SunOS -> Solaris

is the obvious one I can think of, but others have done it too.

http://www.software-marketing-advisor.com/software-name.html

has 10 rules for choosing a name for software. The first is:

#1 Do ensure that your product name is not already in use by someone else, and
there are no legal/trademark issues with using it.

I think 'Sage' fails that test myself. At the time it was first thought of, I
doubt William considered the possible use in financial markets. But that seems
quite likely to me now, given both Mathematica and MATLAB have financial
toolboxes.

In fact, documenting the reason for a name change, would show the wide range of
areas to which Sage could be put.

'OpenMath' is one option I could think of, but I'm sure others could come up
with something better.
