I agree that such a thing would be very convenient. I have found
myself always using something like

lattice_polytope.read_palp_matrix(r"""4 5
1 0 0 0 1
0 1 0 0 1
0 0 1 0 1
0 0 0 1 1""")

for entering matrices since it involves much less typing than usual
matrix constructors (except for the function name itself and necessity
to explicitly give dimensions - this function was written for other
purposes).

Perhaps there should be a similar standard matrix constructor from a
string? So that one may write something like this

matrix(r"""
1 0 0 0 1
0 1 0 0 1
0 0 1 0 1
0 0 0 1 1""")

GUI may be even better, but it can be difficult to call it to edit an
existing matrix code in a notebook cell.
