Sounds like an interesting idea, specially the fact that you can see each others code so you have a great opportunity to learn the language. As they say in the FAQ, "From what we've seen, the tweaking has made the contest more of a learning experience. ". It could also be a good chance for finding bugs and, who knows, solve them, apart from attracting more people to the community.
I think we could begin with the Sage community as it is smaller, and if the contests are cool, then others will imitate us :P I have had another idea by the way, how about an @interact contest?
