OK, that worked.  I didn't even have to rebuild everything (at least,
not to get sage
to start up properly, anyway; I'll do more tests at some point).

Incidentally, this wasn't the cause of the problem, but I have had
trouble
with software builds in the past because I "set noclobber" (on the
Mac, "set -C").  I prefer to have that option set, but so many
software installs
don't like it at all.
