That might be a workable solution. It is certainly the approach taken
by a lot of Windows installers.

Perhaps the browser could automatically download the right file. I'm
not sure how much information is given by Firefox on Linux about the
system it is run on. It could certainly be done with a bit of
javascript or similar, though people might tend to disable that.

If you go to the Adobe site, and try to download Acrobat reader, it
attempts to work out what system you are using, but offers the option
of downloading a binary for something else.

Anyway, it is food for thought.
