John, could you try the following: download and extract sage-5.5 (or a
later sage-5.6.beta if you wish) on that machine, apply the patch from
#13937 to the Sage root and then compile Sage as usual, without any SAGE
environment variables set.

At the very beginning of install.log, you should see a message about
"installing GCC because you have gcc version...", please confirm that
this is indeed the case.
