Just saying: I think it is unfortunate that some (not all) high schools pretend
to teach polynomials to their students without telling them what is a ring. My
grammar school had a focus on music and old languages (not on maths), but
nonetheless we had axiomatic definitions for groups, rings, modules and so on;
e.g., proving 1>0 in ordered fields was a homework exercise.
