Its tricky. The right thing to do would be to keep stdout/stderr from the child process and wait until either it returns an error, it opens a window (wait for an X window with the right _NET_WM_PID to pop up), or a timeout expries (10 seconds or so).Then show the output with a suitable error message if it did not open a window.
