I think that the only difference between an optional and a standard package
should be (and I hope: currently *is*!) that an optional package is not
(yet) installed by default, for reasons that are independent of the
overall quality and portability of the package.

In other words: Installation of an optional package is supposed to work
and keep SageMath fully functional on all supported platforms. If it doesn't
then it is an experimental package.
