When do you move to, at least, use "-Wl,--as-needed" on linux like we
do in Gentoo?
I know exactly what you means and where you want to go. It just requires
that your linker and library loading mechanism is smart enough.

Not all OSes are equal in that regards, but if you want to go that
way you'll have to fix flint. It is not hard to insert a "-install_name"
switch in the build system for OS X. I certainly do in my ebuild.
