You always want some swap with linux, whatever you're doing. My rule of thumb is to allocate a swap partition twice the size of your ram. Granted I started with that rule back when my machine had 8MB of ram, but it still seams to work. Also consider a couple of gigs of ram for that machine as a cheap way of giving it a nice speed boost.
