Here are a few reasons that spring to mind immediately: 0) this is *only* for distributing sage, not for anything else 1) user complaints about virtualbox being dog slow, e.g., like in this thread 2) vmware has much, much better support for compressing virtual disks 3) virtualbox is slow for me too -- build sage from source takes much longer on my office box with linux in virtualbox than vmware 4) oracle 5) vmware's network interface system is VASTLY superior to virtualbox, since the virtual machine only has one network card, but it works both locally and to connect to the outside world. If anybody wants to provide a VirtualBox machine for Windows too, be my guest.
