Ah, yes. I would highly recommend opening a new ticket - perhaps under 'interfaces' - with some of these ideas. Be sure to include a link to #8868 and #11249, and links from those to it. But that goes way beyond the current mandate of those tickets; at this point we are starting to do something much more invasive than just a pexpect interface - and, of course, potentially much more useful! And if you manage to come up with something like this, I'll be the first to try to review it :) Looking at what you suggest, I think that would be possible and desirable. Though not everything uses cairo - Mac uses Quartz/Aqua, for instance.
