Graeme, You probably do not need to be told this, but while Maarten is talking about heights of number field elements and you are talking about height of points on elliptic curves, the latter does use the former.
Someone should check that with the patches from ticket #11758 applied, the point height is computed correctly. If not, then a different ticket needs to be opened.
