And apparently the message I gave was useless, since I indeed asumed what John explained. But this is not true!
The addition of the patch at the ticket did not change anything to the examples above (I got exactly the same answers as you in the case with the negative height). And the addition of the patch also doesn't make the doctest for heights on points on elliptic curves fail.
