That was definitely the original motivation. <flame> My personal perspective these days -- seeing how the web has evolved -- is that our core software (Sage et al.) absolutely must be open source. If it isn't, it really makes doing computational math often absolutely stupidly horrible, like trying to prove new theorems without being able to read other people's proofs of their theorems. For example, in answering the OP's questions about computing primes (another thread), I consulted the source code of Sage repeatedly (with ??). That said, I've never once felt a need to look at the source code of SX in order to use it or contribute. So I don't think the non-open-source nature of hosting sites for "online conversations" is a technical obstruction to us getting work done. The Magma, Maple., etc., model for core software is not only expensive but a genuine technical obstruction to doing computational mathematics, and to computational mathematics being respectable. Let's put them out of business. </flame> William > > - kcrisman > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "sage-support" group. > To unsubscribe from this group and stop receiving emails from it, send an > email to sage-support+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. > To post to this group, send email to sage-support@googlegroups.com. > Visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/sage-support. > For more options, visit https://groups.google.com/d/optout. -- William Stein Professor of Mathematics University of Washington http://wstein.org -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "sage-support" group.
