No, you are just not seeing the obvious here. William views SMC as a part of activities associated to Sagemath development, and it's hard to argue against this point of view. (as e.g. SMC is a popular platform to run courses that use Sagemath, and this is obviously important.) Thus SMC may fund William's food etc., as part of activities associated with Sagemath development. (In general, when one *funds* something it normally is via payment of money.)
