Thanks -- that's a very interesting and useful explanation (which probably
deserves a wider audience). It would be nice to think that our review
system for patches might have caught that.
Perhaps something we ought to add to a standard review is to check the
times of doctests before and after. But that would not be very easy since
of course patches add doctests.
