Another thing I tried was a completely different workflow:
(a) download the old gap spkg, unpack it into sagestuff/gap-4.4.10.p10
(b) in sagestuff, create a clone using hg clone gap-4.4.10.p10 gap-4.4.12
(first, I backed up the old directory gap-4.4.12 for safety)
This creates a directory sagestuff/gap-4.4.12
(c) made all the changes described to this clone
(d) cd sagestuff/gap-4.4.12, and enter "hg commit" and "hg export"
I still get

abort: export requires at least one changeset
}}}
