 PS To the above:  The nth_root() function should definitely catch x=0 as a
 special trivial case.  But here that would just hide the problem, that
 calling roots() on the polynomial {{{x^3}}} over the field F causes a
 crash.  I have not time to dig deeper:  I would expect that first one
 would take {{{gcd(x^3,x^3-x)}}} ...
