I think I will be able to provide an alternative (=sparse) implementation
soon. I think for {{{stretch}}} and the to-be-implemented permutation
action, the sparse version is more convenient, while arithmetic might be
faster in the dense version. However, I can only start the work on
Wednesday.
Can you tell me what (coercion?) methods are needed to provide in order to
have a smooth transition from sparse to dense and from dense to sparse?
And then I think there should also be a {{{subs}}} method, based on which
it would be easy to implement a permutation action.
