My guess is there's a call to float(), intended to coerce numeric types,
which inadvertently parses strings. Its common to do less extensive
argument checking in a typeless language like Python, however, since the
alternative would be infeasible. I doubt that the author intended this
behavior, but it is relatively harmless.
