Comment:

 I tested this and it seems to work well.

 I agree with what you say about the documentation being a bit unclear
 about the interpretation of `num_points`. I also agree that it is nicest
 to interpret it as the number of intervals. Maybe you can update the
 documentation in you patch? I'll give it a positive review after that.
